NILS meant Joan would still have a job the following year

What do you do when you need your car for work, but can’t afford registration and insurance?

This was the situation Joan faced year after year. She was working in aged care and needed her car to visit clients and drive them around, but her income was low and registration and insurance was “too expensive.”

“I know they give you petrol money and all of that stuff, but to me it was just too expensive … a lot of money going in and not much coming back.”

Thankfully Joan had a fall-back plan – the No Interest Loan Scheme (NILS).

The team at Gosford City NILS, were able to provide Joan with a loan so she could stay on the road and stay in work.

“It gave me confidence to know that the loan (NILS) was there, especially with the car rego and insurance. Knowing I could still have a job the following year because I could always use NILS as a backup.”

Joan used NILS for a number of years and, despite her low income, she never struggled with the payments, in fact, she found repaying them “really easy.”

“I’ve actually thought about upping the payments because they spread them over 12 months and because they come directly out of Centrelink you don’t miss them.”

Joan has now left the aged care sector and is retraining for a new career in administration, but the No Interest Loan Scheme has continued to provide support. Recently Joan lost all her home furnishings when she had to leave her home. When the time came to re-establish a new one, she turned to NILS to get her going.

“I left the house and got rid of everything I owned … I came back and I didn’t have anything and I needed a fridge … I still don’t have everything and, as soon as I pay the fridge off, I’m getting a lounge.”

“I think it’s a really great program … It’s such a good back up for people.”

Joan couldn’t speak more highly of Jade from Gosford City NILS who supported her through the loan process.

“She’s (Jade) a fantastic person, totally non-judgmental. You can tell she’s a really caring person and she’s there to help you. She made me feel really comfortable. I wasn’t embarrassed about my circumstances, I just felt really comfortable.”
