‘Tell us how your clients stop small problems’ competition winners announced

When we put the call out recently for stories about clients who are stopping small problems from getting big, we were flooded with creative and inspiring tales.

We are excited to announce the three winning organisations and their clients. Each organisation will win a prize valued at over $300, while the winning clients will receive a $100 WISH Gift Card.

Congratulations to Carers Queensland and their client Lena, to Wesley Mission Brisbane Elorac Place and their client J.H, and to Global Care Dubbo and client Clinton.

Thank you to everyone who shared their stories!

Clinton went to Global Care Dubbo when his hot water system burst and he couldn’t afford a new hot water system for his family. He was looking after his children on a very regular basis, but still paying a high rate of child support to his previous partner. Things were so tight that he was beginning to miss mortgage payments. Global Care worked through Clinton’s budget with him, helped him to follow up on the rate of child support and approved his NILS loan for a new hot water system. Their help made a huge difference to Clinton’s life. His fortnightly power bill has more than halved due to the new water system, and he now receives the correct Family Assistance. He is at least $21,000 a year better off and the cupboards and fridge are always full. His kids are happier than ever.

J.H. approached Wesley Mission Brisbane Elorac Place for a NILS loan to fix his scooter. He has limited mobility and relies on his scooter for everyday movement, but it was broken so he was confined to the house. His loan application was successful, so he now has his mobility back and is enjoying “tripping about on his scooter of freedom!”

Michael is 29 and suffers from a severe brain injury. He is bed ridden, breathes through a tracheotomy and requires constant care from his mother, Lena. She applied for a NILS loan through Carers Queensland to buy him a massage chair, leg massage and panel heater. These simple items have provided huge support for both Lena and Michael. Previously, Lena was massaging Michael from head to toe every day. The panel heater helps warm Michael, while the massage chair and leg massager help to stimulate his muscles and improve his circulation. The equipment has meant that Michael gets appropriate care at home, so he can continue to live with his family instead of spending time in and out of hospitals.
